In some cases, we may deem a tooth extraction necessary for the long-term health of your oral well-being.

A tooth extraction involves the complete removal of a tooth from its socket and can be performed as either a ‘simple’ extraction or a ‘surgical’ extraction.

In a simple extraction, the tooth in question will be visible above the gum line and therefore easier to remove. We may recommend a surgical extraction when the tooth is broken or impacted below the gum line which makes the removal more complex.

FAQs

Why do I need a tooth extraction?

In most cases, we’ll always do everything we can to save a tooth from extraction. There are some situations where it is necessary, however, including:

  • Extensive damage or decay that has left the tooth beyond repair.
  • A loose tooth that cannot be restored another way.
  • Overcrowding of the mouth.
  • Impacted or infected wisdom teeth.
  • Baby teeth that haven’t fallen out by the time adult teeth emerge.
  • Infection due to a weakened immune system – this is sometimes a result of cancer therapy.

Is it painful?

We understand that tooth extractions have something of a negative, and anxiety-inducing reputation. You don’t need to worry about pain, however, as we will always administer anaesthetic before undertaking this treatment. If you are having a simple extraction, we will most likely administer local anaesthetic which will leave you aware of what is happening but completely comfortable throughout.

Surgical extractions may call for a general anaesthetic, however, so you would be unconscious throughout the treatment. In both cases, you will need someone to accompany you home from the practice, and must not drive, drink alcohol, or take care of young children in the following 24 hours.

You should expect to experience some pain once the anaesthetic has worn off, but in most cases, this can be treated with painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
